Description
The Willow Kitten moth (Cerura liturata) is a representative of the Notodontidae family, belonging to the order Lepidoptera. This insect is primarily known as a leaf-eating pest that affects various species of willow and poplar trees, often found in temperate forest and riparian zones.
This pest mainly targets host plants belonging to the Salicaceae family. The larvae are specialized feeders that thrive on the foliage of willow trees and poplars. While often occurring in low numbers, outbreaks can cause severe defoliation of host trees, particularly in nursery settings or young plantations.
The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern. Adult moths emerge in spring or early summer to mate and lay eggs. The larvae develop through several instars, displaying distinctive morphological features, such as tail-like appendages used for defense against predators. They pupate in hard cocoons, often attached to the bark of trees.
The primary damage is caused by the caterpillars feeding on the leaves. They can consume large amounts of leaf tissue, leaving behind only the veins. Severe infestations result in significant stress to the host tree, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and weakened growth, which makes the plants more susceptible to secondary pathogens and environmental stress.
Effective management strategies combine cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Cultural control includes monitoring plantations for early signs of egg-laying or larval activity. If necessary, biological insecticides, such as those based on Bacillus thuringiensis, are highly effective against young larvae while minimizing impact on non-target species. In severe cases, targeted application of contact insecticides may be required to prevent canopy damage.
