Description
Systematic position: The genus Chaetanaphothrips belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These insects are notorious pests in greenhouse environments, causing significant physiological stress to host plants through their feeding activities.
Host plants: The pest exhibits a wide host range, primarily affecting orchids, anthuriums, and other tropical foliage plants. In commercial agriculture, it is known to damage citrus fruits and bananas, creating necrotic lesions that render the produce unsellable.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves egg, larva, two pupal stages (propupa and pupa), and adult. Unlike many other thrips, Chaetanaphothrips species often pupate in protected sites such as leaf axils or soil debris. Their development is rapid, particularly under warm, humid conditions, allowing for multiple generations per year.
