Description
Taxonomic position of this pest identifies it as a member of the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. Known widely as the banana rust thrips or red-banded thrips, it is a significant quarantine and agricultural pest in many tropical and subtropical regions across the globe.
Host plants are primarily banana cultivars, where the pest resides under the bracts. However, the species is polyphagous and has been documented on various other crops, including citrus, orchids, and several species of ornamental plants, particularly in greenhouse settings where environmental conditions are favorable.
Biology and life cycle consist of eggs, two larval stages, prepupa, pupa, and adults. The female inserts eggs into the fruit or leaf tissue. The life cycle is temperature-dependent and can be completed in a relatively short period, allowing for multiple overlapping generations during the growing season.
Damage and economic impact result from feeding on the fruit surface. As the thrips feed, they cause the epidermis of the banana peel to become corky, discolored, and covered in rust-like lesions. This damage is purely cosmetic but renders the fruit unfit for international trade and significantly lowers market value.
Control measures require an integrated approach to suppress populations. Management strategies include:
- Regular field monitoring using blue or yellow sticky traps.
- Application of selective insecticides during periods of peak population activity.
- Ensuring proper sanitation by removing debris and weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
- Proper management of the banana bunch canopy to reduce humidity and shelter areas for the insects.
