Description

Systematic position: The cereal stem flea beetle (Chaetocnema aridula) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. It is a significant pest that specializes in damaging cereal grasses throughout temperate regions, often causing substantial losses in field crops.

Host plants: The pest primarily attacks wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In addition to cultivated cereals, the beetle thrives on various wild grasses such as couch grass (Elymus repens), which provide a reservoir for the population before the crop emerges in the field.

Biology and lifecycle: Adult beetles overwinter in soil debris and protected areas near field margins. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge and begin feeding on young leaves. Females lay eggs in the soil near the base of the host plants, and the emerging larvae migrate into the stems to feed on the inner tissues.

Damage and pest status: Adult beetles damage leaves by creating small, longitudinal window-like feeding scars, which hinder photosynthesis. The most severe damage is caused by the larvae boring into the stems, which leads to the death of the central leaf and stunted growth, effectively reducing the number of productive tillers in a stand.
