Beet flea beetle

Chaetocnema chlorophana, commonly known as a type of beet flea beetle, is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It causes substantial damage to sugar beet and fodder beet crops, particularly affecting them during the vulnerable seedling stages.

This beetle species primarily targets plants of the Amaranthaceae family, with cultivated sugar beets being the main host. It also feeds on various common weeds, such as orache and pigweed, which serve as essential alternative food sources and reservoirs for the pest population throughout the spring season.

The biological cycle of the beetle is highly dependent on temperature. The adults overwinter in the soil or under plant debris, emerging in early spring as soon as temperatures rise.
