Cylindrical flea beetle

Systematic position. The cylindrical flea beetle (Chaetocnema cylindrica) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that primarily targets cereal crops, often causing visible damage during the early establishment phases of plant development.

Host crops and impact. The beetle mainly affects small grains such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Adult beetles consume the leaf tissue of young seedlings, creating characteristic longitudinal stripes or holes. In instances of high infestation levels, the pest can decimate seedling populations, leading to severe stand thinning and substantial yield losses if not managed correctly.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of the beetle is highly dependent on spring temperatures. Adults overwinter in protected areas, such as soil debris, leaf litter, or grass margins. As soon as the temperature rises, they emerge and begin feeding on early-season grasses and cereal crops. Following a period of maturation feeding, the beetles mate and lay eggs in the soil near the host plants.

Nature of damage. Damage is two-fold: adults feed on the foliage, reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity, while larvae feed on the root systems below the soil surface. This subterranean feeding restricts nutrient and water uptake, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and in some cases, the total death of the young plants during early growth stages.

Control measures. Effective management of the cylindrical flea beetle requires a multifaceted approach to minimize population levels:

• Using systemic insecticidal seed treatments to provide early-season protection.
• Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the pest's lifecycle and food supply.
• Applying tillage practices that bury or destroy overwintering sites in the soil.
• Optimizing fertilizer use to promote vigorous early growth, allowing plants to outgrow damage.
• Monitoring fields closely and applying foliar insecticides if economic thresholds are exceeded.
