Description
Systematic position: The grain flea beetle (Chaetocnema granulosa) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural sectors, particularly impacting cereal grain production due to its specialized feeding habits on monocotyledonous plants.
Affected crops: This beetle primarily targets various cereal crops, including winter and spring wheat, barley, rye, and oats. It also thrives on various wild grass species, which serve as essential alternative hosts, ensuring the continuity of the beetle population between cropping seasons.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles overwinter in the soil, under plant debris, or in field margins. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to infest cereal crops. Females deposit eggs in the soil around the base of host plants. The larvae develop in the soil, feeding on root systems, and then pupate. The new generation of adults emerges during the mid-summer period.
Damage and pest significance: Adults cause damage by chewing elongated longitudinal grooves on leaves, which often appear as distinct stripes. This reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
