The corn flea beetle (Chaetocnema pulicaria) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is a significant agricultural pest that causes considerable damage to young cereal plants, particularly in regions where maize production is intensive.

The primary host for this pest is corn, though it is known to feed on other cereals and grasses, including wheat, barley, oats, and millet. The beetle poses the highest threat to crops during the early seedling stage, from emergence up to the four-leaf stage of the plant.

The life cycle of the beetle involves overwintering as adults in protected areas such as field margins, grass clumps, or plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults migrate to crops to feed and lay eggs in the soil near the roots. The larvae complete their development in the soil, feeding on plant roots before pupating.

The damage caused by the corn flea beetle consists of small, irregular feeding scars and white streaks on the leaves. Severe infestations can lead to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and plant death. Furthermore, this beetle is a recognized vector for Stewart's wilt, a serious bacterial disease affecting corn.
