Description

Taxonomic position: The beet flea beetle (Chaetocnema tibialis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This small beetle is a specialized pest that primarily targets cultivated beet species, often causing significant economic losses during the early seedling stage of plant growth.

Target crops: The pest is primarily associated with sugar beet, fodder beet, and red (table) beet. It can also inhabit wild species of the Amaranthaceae family, which act as secondary hosts when cultivated crops are unavailable or during the non-growing season.

Biology and life cycle: The adult beetles overwinter in plant debris, soil crevices, or field margins. They emerge in the spring as temperatures rise. Females lay eggs in the soil near the host plants. The larvae feed on the roots of the seedlings, which usually has a limited direct impact, while the adults continue to damage the foliage throughout the early season.

Damage and pest status: The most critical damage is caused by the overwintered adults that feed on cotyledons and young leaves.
