Description
Systematic position: The striped jewel beetle (Chalcites striatus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. These beetles, often characterized by their iridescent and metallic appearance, are significant pests that primarily affect the health and structural integrity of woody plants.
Host plants: The pest targets a variety of deciduous and coniferous tree species. It is particularly drawn to trees that are already stressed due to drought, physical damage, or poor site conditions, often colonizing branches or the main trunk of weakened hosts in both forests and managed landscapes.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The adult beetles are typically active during warmer months, while the larval stage, which lives under the bark, is the most destructive phase, spending months or even years feeding before maturing into the adult form.
Damage and economic impact: Larvae create extensive feeding galleries beneath the bark, disrupting the cambium and phloem layers. This process restricts the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients, resulting in canopy dieback, stunted growth, weakened structural integrity, and often the eventual death of the infested tree.
Control measures:
- Removal and destruction of heavily infested or dead trees to reduce the local population.
