Description

The five-lined skink (scientific name Plestiodon fasciatus, family Scincidae) is a reptile species that can occasionally become a nuisance in agricultural settings. While they are primarily insectivores, their burrowing behavior and nesting habits in garden beds can negatively impact plant health and nursery operations.

These skinks thrive in moist environments with abundant cover, such as mulch, debris, or woodpiles. When these conditions are found in vegetable gardens or greenhouses, the skinks may cause damage to seedlings and young transplants. By creating tunnels in soft soil, they often disrupt the root systems and cause premature desiccation of the root zone.

The biology of P. fasciatus is marked by a distinct reproductive phase in spring, where females seek out damp, decaying organic matter to lay eggs. These nesting sites are often located in close proximity to irrigation systems or shaded areas of nurseries, leading to a high concentration of individuals in the exact areas where intensive gardening takes place.

The damage caused is primarily mechanical and disruptive. Their burrowing activity can prevent seeds from germinating properly by creating air pockets around the roots or dislodging seeds from the soil. Furthermore, their movement across the nursery can facilitate the mechanical transmission of soil-borne pathogens from diseased areas to healthy beds, increasing the risk of plant diseases.

Effective management strategies focus on habitat modification and physical exclusion. By removing logs, debris piles, and excessive mulch near sensitive crops, farmers can reduce the attractiveness of the site to the skinks. Consistent soil cultivation and the use of physical barriers around the perimeter of garden beds are the most reliable methods to protect valuable plant stock from these opportunistic burrowers.
