Mason bee
Chalicodoma
Description
The Mason bee, classified under the genus Chalicodoma and the family Megachilidae, is a type of solitary bee known for its unique nesting habits. While these insects are primarily recognized as valuable pollinators, they are often categorized as minor pests by nursery owners and gardeners due to their habit of cutting leaf fragments to build their nest cells.
These bees typically target a variety of broad-leaved plants, including ornamental shrubs, roses, lilac, and legumes like alfalfa. The damage is strictly physical, occurring when the female cuts circular or oval shapes from the margins of leaves. This behavior causes visible aesthetic damage, which can be concerning in professional floriculture and home landscaping.
The biology of Chalicodoma follows a standard Hymenopteran life cycle. Adults emerge in spring or early summer to mate. The female constructs nests in hollow stems, crevices, or man-made structures, lining them with soil, clay, or masticated leaf material. Each cell is provisioned with pollen and nectar, and a single egg is laid per cell before it is sealed.
Regarding harm, the primary issue is the loss of leaf surface area, which decreases the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant. While healthy, established plants can usually tolerate this damage without significant loss of vigor, small seedlings or plants with a high density of nesting activity may show signs of stress or reduced growth rates.
Management strategies focus on non-lethal deterrents because of the species' role in pollination. Key practices include:
- Covering vulnerable plants with fine mesh netting during the peak nesting season.
- Placing "trap nests" or bee hotels at a distance from the plants you wish to protect.
- Maintaining plant health to ensure the foliage can withstand minor physical damage.
- Avoiding systemic insecticides that could harm other beneficial pollinators.
In most scenarios, the presence of Chalicodoma is an indicator of a healthy local environment, and damage is rarely severe enough to warrant chemical intervention. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques are highly recommended to balance the benefits of pollination with the aesthetic need for undamaged foliage.
