Leafcutter bee

Taxonomic classification. The leafcutter bee (genus Megachile) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Megachilidae. These are solitary bees that, while acting as valuable pollinators, are considered pests in horticultural settings due to their practice of harvesting plant material to build their nests.

Affected crops. Leafcutter bees show a distinct preference for plants with tender, flexible foliage. Common targets include roses, lilac, wisteria, locust trees, alfalfa, and a variety of fruit trees. In nursery environments and ornamental gardens, the impact is more pronounced due to the density of preferred host plants.

Biology and life cycle. During the breeding season, the female bee identifies suitable plants to harvest. She skillfully cuts precise circular or oval-shaped pieces from leaf blades using her mandibles. These sections are transported to a nest site, which could be in hollow wood, plant stems, or soil, where they are used to create individual brood cells packed with pollen and nectar for the developing larvae.

Damage and severity. The primary sign of infestation is the appearance of neat, semi-circular or oval cutouts on the edges of leaves. While individual bees do not usually kill a plant, a heavy infestation can cause significant defoliation, leading to stress, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and diminished overall vigor of the affected ornamental plants or shrubs.

Control measures. Because leafcutter bees are beneficial pollinators, it is crucial to avoid heavy chemical pesticide use. Recommended strategies include:

• Applying neem oil or organic garlic-based repellents to deter bees from foliage.
• Using protective fine mesh netting over susceptible plants during the peak activity period.
• Sealing hollow plant stems or wooden garden structures to prevent bees from building nests nearby.
• Improving plant vitality through proper fertilization to help them withstand minor leaf tissue loss.
