Description

The Bruce spanworm (Cheimatobia bruceata) is a moth species within the Geometridae family, order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as a forest and orchard pest that can cause significant defoliation when population densities reach outbreak levels in temperate regions.

This pest targets a variety of deciduous tree species. Orchard trees such as apple, cherry, and pear are frequently affected. Additionally, native hardwoods like maple, birch, and beech are common hosts, making the moth a concern for both commercial fruit growers and forestry managers.

The biological cycle is distinct due to the late autumn emergence of adults. Adult females are flightless, featuring vestigial wings, and must crawl up tree trunks to deposit their eggs. These eggs remain on the bark throughout the winter, providing the species with a high survival rate during cold seasons.

The larvae, which emerge in spring, are the primary cause of damage. They feed on opening buds and young foliage. In cases of high infestation, the larvae can strip a tree of almost all its leaves, leading to severe stress, reduced photosynthesis, and potentially crop failure for that year.

Management strategies focus on breaking the reproductive cycle and controlling the larval stage. Fall applications of sticky barriers on trunks effectively prevent egg-laying females from reaching the canopy. During the spring, monitoring is essential, followed by the use of selective insecticides or biological control agents if damage thresholds are exceeded.
