Description
The Northern winter moth (Cheimatobia fagata) is a lepidopteran insect belonging to the family Geometridae. It is a common pest found across Europe and parts of Asia, frequently damaging broad-leaved trees in deciduous forests, parks, and agricultural orchard settings.
The primary host for this species is the birch tree, although it also feeds on a wide range of other plants, including alder, linden, hazel, and several fruit-bearing trees. Widespread outbreaks can lead to severe defoliation, significantly impacting the growth and overall health of the affected trees.
The life cycle of the moth consists of one generation per year. The species overwinters in the egg stage, attached to the bark of host trees. Larvae hatch in early spring, synchronized with bud burst. After completing their development, they drop to the ground to pupate in the soil during the summer months.
The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which feed on young leaves and developing buds. During peak infestation, they can consume the entire leaf canopy, leaving only veins. This heavy feeding stress reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, often leading to reduced vigor and vulnerability to secondary infections.
Integrated pest management strategies are recommended:
- Cultivating the soil beneath tree canopies to disrupt pupation sites.
- Applying sticky bands to tree trunks to trap larvae.
