The spruce needle moth (Chionodes tragicella) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. This insect is recognized in forestry and arboriculture as a pest that specifically targets coniferous trees, often causing physiological stress to spruce stands by damaging their needles and reducing their overall vigor.
The primary host plants for Chionodes tragicella are various species of the genus Picea, particularly the Norway spruce. The larvae prefer to feed on young needles, which are more nutritious and easier for the newly emerged caterpillars to consume. While infestation rates vary by year, localized outbreaks can lead to significant aesthetic and biological damage in managed forestry settings.
The biology of Chionodes tragicella follows a seasonal cycle. Adults typically emerge in late spring or summer, mating and laying eggs on the needles or twigs of the host tree. In nurseries, strict phytosanitary protocols are essential to prevent the spread of the moth, as even low population levels can be detrimental to the development of young seedlings intended for reforestation programs.
