Chirida signifera
Chirida signifera
Description
Systematic position. Chirida signifera belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae (leaf beetles). Commonly known as a type of tortoise beetle, it is easily identified by its flattened body shape, which allows the insect to hide its head and legs under its protective shield-like structure while feeding on foliage.
Host plants. This pest primarily targets plants within the Convolvulaceae family. It is a well-known pest of sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas). Beyond crops, the beetle thrives on various wild morning glory species, which serve as alternative food sources and reservoirs for the pest throughout the growing season.
Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. Larvae are distinct for their defensive behavior, often using their own excrement as a shield against predators. Environmental factors like temperature and humidity play a critical role in determining the duration of each generation.
Damage and severity. Both adults and larvae cause significant damage by skeletonizing the leaves. They consume the leaf tissue, leaving behind ragged holes and sometimes only the main veins. This damage disrupts the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to reduced vigor, stunted development, and lower crop yields, as the plant cannot effectively produce energy for root development.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. This includes:
- Removing weed hosts (like wild morning glories) near fields to reduce pest pressure.
- Monitoring fields regularly to identify early signs of infestation.
- Applying systemic or contact insecticides when economic thresholds are reached.
- Encouraging natural enemies and biological predators to keep populations in check.
