Description
The grain thrips (Chirothrips aculeatus) is a significant pest belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. This insect primarily targets cereal crops, causing economic damage to wheat, rye, barley, and various wild grasses throughout its distribution range.
The biology of this species is characterized by a univoltine life cycle, meaning it produces only one generation per year. Adult fertilized females overwinter in the soil or within plant debris. As temperatures rise in the spring, these adults emerge and migrate to cereal fields to begin feeding and oviposition.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, several larval instars, a pupal stage, and the adult stage. Eggs are inserted directly into the tissues of the glumes of the ear, which protects them from environmental factors and chemical treatments. Larvae feed on the developing kernels, while pupation typically occurs within the ear itself or leaf sheaths.
Damage is primarily caused by both larvae and adults sucking cell sap from the developing grain. This feeding behavior leads to grain shriveling, reduced grain weight, and poor kernel development. In cases of high infestation, the total yield of the crop can be significantly compromised, and the baking quality of the flour may be reduced due to the damaged grain.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Chirothrips aculeatus:

- deep autumn plowing to bury overwintering adults;
- destruction of grassy weeds that serve as alternative hosts;
