Description
The genus Chloroclystis belongs to the Geometridae family within the order Lepidoptera. These small moths are known to be pests that specifically target the reproductive structures of plants, including flower buds, blossoms, and developing fruits, causing significant agricultural damage.
These pests commonly infest a variety of ornamental plants, particularly chrysanthemums and roses, as well as several fruit-bearing species. During the active flowering season, the larvae bore into the buds, which leads to stunted growth, loss of flowers, and, in severe cases, total reproductive failure for the infested plants.
The life cycle of the pest is synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. It progresses through egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. The overwintering phase usually occurs as a pupa in the soil or in crevices of bark, with adult emergence occurring just as the buds begin to swell in the spring.
The damage caused by these insects is primarily due to the feeding habits of the larvae. By consuming the inner parts of the buds, they destroy the developing floral organs. Furthermore, the larval excrement often contaminates the blossoms, which creates an environment conducive to secondary fungal or bacterial infections.
Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Regular field scouting during the budding stage is crucial for early detection. When infestations reach economic thresholds, application of selective insecticides is recommended, alongside the removal and proper disposal of infested flower heads to reduce the population density for the following season.
