Systematic position: The genus Chorioptes belongs to the order Acariformes, family Psoroptidae. These microscopic ectoparasites are commonly known as surface mites or non-burrowing mites. Unlike other species that tunnel deep into the dermis, they inhabit the skin surface, feeding on epidermal debris and skin secretions.

Which cultures and organisms it affects: This organism is not a plant pest; it is a veterinary parasite. It primarily infests livestock, including cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and occasionally rabbits. The presence of these mites in agricultural environments negatively impacts animal welfare, production efficiency, and the quality of animal-derived products.

Biology and life cycle: The entire life cycle, consisting of egg, larva, two nymphal stages, and adult, takes place on the host. The cycle is relatively short, usually lasting 14 to 21 days depending on environmental conditions like humidity and temperature. Transmission occurs primarily through direct physical contact or contaminated bedding and grooming equipment.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: Infestation, known as chorioptic mange, leads to intense itching, crusting, and inflammation of the skin. Affected areas typically include the base of the tail, udder, and lower limbs. Chronic infestation causes hair loss, thickened skin (hyperkeratosis), and significant distress to the animal, resulting in reduced feed conversion and lower output.
