Chorioptes bovis, known as the chorioptic mange mite, is an ectoparasite that causes the condition known as chorioptic mange. It is essential to note that this organism is a veterinary pest rather than a plant pest. It is classified within the order Acariformes and the family Psoroptidae, inhabiting the upper layers of the host's epidermis.
This mite primarily affects cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. The parasite typically colonizes the tail base, udder, inner thighs, and the lower parts of the limbs, where the skin is most sensitive to the mechanical feeding activity and the metabolic waste produced by the mites.
The life cycle of Chorioptes bovis includes the stages of egg, larva, protonymph, teleonymph, and adult. Development from egg to sexually mature adult occurs entirely on the host's body and takes approximately 2 to 3 weeks, facilitating rapid transmission of the infestation within a herd through direct contact.
Symptoms of infestation include severe pruritus, scratching, oozing of serum that dries into crusts, and subsequent hair loss (alopecia) in affected areas. In severe cases, the skin may become thickened and folded, leading to reduced animal productivity, poor condition, and damage to the quality of hides.
Control measures require strict adherence to veterinary and sanitary protocols and regular inspection of livestock. Treatment involves the application of acaricidal agents via sprays, dips, or systemic injections. Disinfection of housing and equipment, along with the quarantine of new animals, is crucial to preventing the widespread transmission of the parasite.
