Taxonomic position: The Klamath weed beetle (Chrysolina quadrigemina) is a member of the order Coleoptera and belongs to the family Chrysomelidae. This species is well-documented in entomology for its precise host specificity, primarily targeting plants within the genus Hypericum.
Host plants and damage scope: The beetle is famously associated with the Saint John's wort (Hypericum perforatum). In agricultural landscapes, it is widely recognized not just as a pest, but as a classic example of a successful biological control agent, introduced in several countries to reduce the spread of this invasive weed on grazing lands where it poses toxicological risks to livestock.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is strictly synchronized with the phenology of its host plant. Adult beetles typically overwinter in the soil or under leaf litter. As spring arrives, they emerge to feed on foliage and lay eggs.
