Alder leaf beetle

The alder leaf beetle (Chrysomela aenea) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. This beetle is easily recognized by its shiny, metallic appearance, which typically displays shades of green, copper, or bronze, making it stand out against the host plant's foliage.

The primary host plants for this pest are alder species (Alnus). However, the beetle can also feed on related plants such as willows and birches. Both adult beetles and their larvae are responsible for significant defoliation, which can stress the trees during the growing season.

The life cycle of Chrysomela aenea includes hibernation as adults in the forest floor litter or shallow soil. When temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge to feed on developing leaves and mate. Females then deposit clusters of eggs on the undersides of leaves, ensuring that hatching larvae have immediate access to food.

The damage is characterized by skeletonization. Larvae feed in groups, consuming the leaf tissue between the veins, which gives the foliage a netted, transparent appearance. Heavy infestations can lead to significant canopy loss, potentially reducing the tree's growth rate and causing leaves to brown and drop prematurely.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, which prioritize monitoring and early intervention, are recommended to prevent the population from reaching levels that require extensive chemical spraying. Healthy, well-maintained trees are generally more resilient to such defoliation events.
