Willow leaf beetle

The willow leaf beetle (Chrysomela saliceti) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. This insect is a specialist herbivore known to cause significant damage to the foliage of trees within the Salicaceae family, particularly affecting willow and poplar nurseries and managed landscapes.

The host plants for this beetle include various species of willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus). It thrives in environments where these trees are planted in high density, making it a common concern for arborists and gardeners who notice the degradation of leaf quality on willow species such as the crack willow, goat willow, and white willow.

The life cycle of Chrysomela saliceti is characterized by complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles overwinter in leaf litter, bark crevices, or the soil surface near the host trees. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge, feed briefly, and mate, after which females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves.

The damage caused by these beetles is quite distinctive. Young larvae feed gregariously, initially skeletonizing the leaves by consuming the soft tissues between the veins. As larvae mature, they consume larger portions of the leaf, often leaving only the main veins. Adults also feed by chewing on the leaf margins, which causes significant cosmetic and physiological damage to the tree.

Management strategies for this pest include a combination of sanitation and chemical controls. In residential settings, manual removal of larvae and adults can be effective if the infestation is localized. In larger plantations, the application of appropriate insecticides is often necessary when scouting reports indicate that the population has reached an economic threshold.
