Dune tiger beetle

The systematic position of the dune tiger beetle (Cicindela maritima) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Carabidae (ground beetles). While predominantly recognized as predatory insects, under specific agricultural conditions or during high-density population outbreaks, they can act as pests that damage young plant tissues near sandy habitats.

Crops susceptible to damage include vegetables, grains, and specialty crops cultivated in coastal or riverine areas where the soil composition is sandy. Because the beetle thrives in these specific environments, it often overlaps with agricultural fields, leading to incidental feeding on young sprouts and seedlings during early growth stages.

The biology and life cycle involve larval development within vertical burrows in the soil. These larvae are highly opportunistic; if natural prey is scarce, they shift their diet towards the roots and lower stems of surrounding vegetation. The adults, being agile and quick-moving, can also contribute to crop injury by biting into succulent plant tissues.

The nature of damage and harmfulness is characterized by mechanical injury to the basal stem and root systems. This feeding pattern creates entry points for soil-borne pathogens and directly impacts the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients. During hot, dry periods, these injuries often result in the rapid wilting and collapse of young seedlings.

Control measures require a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Keeping field margins free of debris and minimizing sandy waste areas can reduce breeding sites. In areas of high economic risk, seed treatments with systemic insecticides are highly effective. Field scouts should prioritize monitoring sandy field borders during the early season to apply targeted interventions when necessary.
