Cidaria

Cidaria is a genus of moths belonging to the family Geometridae. These insects are recognized as significant pests in forestry and horticulture, as their larval stage, commonly known as inchworms or loopers, feeds voraciously on the foliage and buds of various ornamental and fruit-bearing plants.

Taxonomically, the genus belongs to the order Lepidoptera. The caterpillars are characterized by their distinct movement pattern caused by the reduced number of prolegs, forcing them to loop their bodies. This anatomical feature makes them highly mobile and capable of consuming significant amounts of plant matter in a short time.

Cidaria larvae typically target a wide range of host plants, including currants, raspberries, honeysuckle, and various deciduous trees. By feeding on leaves and developing buds, they cause defoliation, which hampers the photosynthetic capacity of the plants and results in reduced growth and lower overall crop yields.

The biology of the pest is marked by a life cycle consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Most species overwinter as pupae hidden in the soil or leaf litter. The emergence of adults and the subsequent appearance of larvae in the spring are timed with the host plant's vegetative phase, which requires farmers to be vigilant during the early growth season.

Effective pest management relies on an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as autumn soil cultivation and the removal of plant debris help reduce overwintering pupae populations. When infestations reach economic thresholds, application of targeted insecticides or biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, is recommended to prevent significant crop loss.
