The Copper sunbird (Cinnyris cupreus) is a member of the Nectariniidae family within the Passeriformes order. While often appreciated for its iridescent plumage, in agricultural contexts, it acts as a pest by compromising the reproductive success of various flowering plants.

The damage is primarily caused by the bird's feeding behavior. Sunbirds often engage in "nectar robbing," where they puncture the base of the corolla to reach the nectar without touching the reproductive parts of the flower, thereby preventing pollination and causing the flower to abort.

Its biological cycle is strictly dependent on floral resources. Sunbirds are highly territorial during breeding seasons, building elaborate, dome-shaped nests suspended from branches. Their high mobility allows them to traverse large areas of farmland, making them difficult to manage in open fields.

The economic impact is manifested in the significant reduction of fruit set in orchard systems. Constant puncturing of flower bases leads to systemic stress in plants and, in severe cases, a total loss of the harvest for specific branches or even entire small trees.

Effective management requires a combination of deterrents and physical barriers. Protective netting remains the most reliable method for high-value orchards. Additionally, deploying visual scarers and managing the local vegetation density can reduce the attractiveness of the site for nesting.

Implementing these strategies requires monitoring the bird population density during the peak flowering stage. Early intervention is key to ensuring that the pollination process remains intact and the crop yield is protected from avian interference throughout the season.
