Description
Systematic position: Sunbirds (genus Nectarinia) belong to the order Passeriformes and the family Nectariniidae. In specific agricultural contexts, particularly in tropical regions, they are considered pests due to their foraging behavior that directly damages flowering and fruiting structures of various horticultural crops.
Damaged crops: These birds primarily target fruit-bearing plants with high sugar content. Key crops at risk include citrus trees, figs, pomegranates, and diverse ornamental flowering species. They are particularly attracted to orchards during the peak flowering and early fruit development stages.
Biology and life cycle: Sunbirds are highly active, nectar-feeding birds with a fast metabolic rate. Their life cycle includes nest building using fine plant materials and cobwebs. During the breeding season, the parents' need for high-energy food sources leads them to repeatedly puncture floral parts and developing fruits to access sap and sugary reserves.
Character of damage and harmfulness: The economic impact is two-fold: direct mechanical damage and secondary infection. By puncturing the epidermis of fruits, sunbirds create pathways for pathogens, leading to fruit rot and premature fruit drop. This significantly reduces the quality of the harvest and limits the shelf-life of the produce.
Protection measures: Integrated management strategies are required to mitigate losses caused by sunbirds:
- Physical exclusion using fine-mesh netting over fruit-bearing trees.
- Installation of bird-scaring devices such as reflective tapes or sound-based systems.
- Implementation of strategic pruning to reduce potential nesting sites within the orchard.
- Use of taste-aversion agents applied to non-edible parts of the plants.
