Cis seriatulus
Cis seriatulus
Description
Cis seriatulus is a species of beetle belonging to the family Ciidae within the order Coleoptera. These insects are commonly known as minute tree-fungus beetles. Their ecological niche is strictly associated with polypore fungi found on various trees, making them a subject of interest in forest health monitoring and forest entomology.
The primary hosts for these beetles are woody polypore fungi that colonize both hardwood and softwood species. While they do not directly attack healthy living wood tissue, they inhabit the sporocarps (fruiting bodies) of fungi that have already established themselves on the host tree, essentially accelerating the breakdown of fungal material and potentially influencing the spread of fungal spores.
The biological cycle of Cis seriatulus consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female lays eggs within the fungal tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae bore through the fungus, feeding on the mycelium. This environment provides the necessary nutrients and protection throughout their development. Once fully grown, they pupate within the fungal body before emerging as adults to reproduce.
The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by numerous tiny exit holes on the surface of the fruiting bodies and the presence of fine powdery frass inside the fungus. While they are not considered primary pests of commercial timber, their presence indicates a high level of fungal activity on the tree, which can be a sign that the tree's physiological health is declining due to existing fungal infections.
Management and protection strategies focus on general forest hygiene rather than targeted chemical control. Because these insects are not harmful to the tree itself, management is limited to:
- Regular sanitation logging to remove dead and diseased wood.
- Removing fungal fruiting bodies from high-value timber or ornamental trees.
- Maintaining optimal tree health to reduce the susceptibility to wood-decaying fungi.
