Description

The rose sawfly (Cladius pectinicornis) is a member of the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. It is a well-known pest that specifically targets rose bushes, causing significant damage to foliage and impacting the overall vitality of the plant during the growing season.

The host range is largely limited to roses and wild rose species. The primary damage is caused by the larval stage of the insect, often referred to as false caterpillars. These larvae are voracious feeders that can strip a rose bush of its leaves if the infestation is left uncontrolled, leading to poor plant health.

The biology of this pest involves multiple generations per year. The insect overwinters as a prepupa within a cocoon hidden in the topsoil layer under the host plant. As temperatures rise in the spring, the adults emerge to mate and lay eggs, typically inserting them into the soft tissues of leaf petioles or midribs.

The damage caused by the larvae is distinct: younger larvae create small, window-like patches on the leaves by eating the tissue while leaving the epidermis intact. As they mature, the larvae consume the entire leaf blade, leaving only the veins behind (skeletonization). This process significantly reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize.

Effective management requires early monitoring and a combination of strategies. Gardeners should practice regular soil cultivation to destroy cocoons, inspect plants frequently for egg clusters or young larvae, and apply insecticidal soaps or systemic pesticides if the infestation becomes heavy. Encouraging natural predators is also a recommended long-term strategy.
