Systematic position. The genus Clemensia belongs to the family Erebidae, specifically within the subfamily Arctiinae. These moths are frequently referred to as "lichen moths" due to the specific dietary requirements of their larval stage, which relies heavily on epiphytic growth.
Host plants. While not strictly pests of the plant tissue itself, these insects are associated with fruit and ornamental trees that host dense populations of lichens and algae. They do not consume leaves or fruits directly but focus their feeding activity on the bark surfaces of trees in orchards or forests.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are generally nocturnal and are known for their patterned wings. Larvae are characterized by dense tufts of hair, which serve as a defense mechanism against avian predators and parasitic wasps that inhabit their environment.
Damage and economic impact. The presence of Clemensia is generally considered a minor concern for agriculture. However, by grazing on lichen colonies, they can disrupt the ecosystem of the tree bark. While not lethal to the tree, heavy infestations indicate high humidity levels which may encourage other, more damaging secondary pests to settle on the bark.
Control measures. Management of Clemensia is largely preventative and focused on maintaining healthy tree bark conditions:
- Mechanical scraping of lichens and moss from tree trunks during the dormant season.
- Application of white lime wash to trunks to reduce suitable habitats for larvae and pupae.
- Proper pruning techniques to ensure adequate light and air circulation throughout the tree canopy.
