Clemensia albata

Systematic position. Clemensia albata belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Erebidae, and subfamily Lithosiinae. This species is commonly known as a lichen moth. It is a specialized insect, with adults typically exhibiting a white wing pattern with dark spots, which provides excellent camouflage against lichen-covered tree bark.

Host plants and feeding habits. This species is primarily associated with trees that host a significant amount of lichen growth. While it is not a direct pest of the plant's internal tissues, the larvae (caterpillars) graze on lichens found on the bark of fruit trees, ornamentals, and forest trees. Their presence is often linked to the ecological condition of the tree's surface.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The larvae are specialized feeders, using their mandibles to scrape lichens from the bark surface. Development speed is highly dependent on humidity and local temperature. Pupation usually takes place in a silk-lined cocoon hidden within bark crevices or protected mossy areas.

Damage and economic impact. The damage caused by Clemensia albata is indirect. By feeding on lichens, the larvae clean the bark; however, a heavy infestation often signals that the tree has a thick layer of lichen, which is frequently associated with poor tree vigor, slow growth, or excessive humidity. This environment can inadvertently facilitate the survival of other, more harmful pests or fungal pathogens.

Protection measures. To manage this insect, growers should focus on cultural practices. Regular maintenance, such as scraping off dead bark and excessive lichen growth during the dormant season, is highly effective. Whitewashing the trunks with lime-based solutions prevents new lichen colonization and reduces the habitat available for the moth's larvae. Chemical control is rarely necessary but can be implemented if populations become exceptionally high.
