Hawfinch

The hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) is a passerine bird in the finch family Fringillidae. While appreciated by birdwatchers for its distinct appearance, its agricultural impact is significant. Equipped with a massive beak capable of exerting high pressure, the hawfinch is a serious threat to various fruit-bearing trees in orchards and nurseries.

The species primarily targets fruit crops such as cherries, plums, apricots, and apples. During the early spring, they consume developing flower buds, which directly reduces the potential harvest. Later in the season, they focus on the fruits, cracking open the stones to consume the kernels, which ruins the fruit and often leaves the tree prone to fungal infections.

Regarding their biology, hawfinches are known for their secretive nature during the nesting season but become gregarious during winter and autumn. Their movement patterns are often driven by food availability. If wild nut and berry crops are scarce, these birds instinctively move into cultivated orchards, where food sources are abundant and predictable.

The damage caused by hawfinches is often underestimated until harvest time. A single bird can process a large number of fruit stones in a day, leading to widespread losses in yield. Furthermore, the damage to young shoots caused by bud-picking can deform the growth of young trees, impacting the long-term health and productivity of the orchard.

Integrated pest management strategies are necessary to mitigate the impact of hawfinches on commercial crops:

• Installation of bird-netting systems to physically exclude birds from the trees.
• Deployment of bio-acoustic deterrents that mimic the distress calls of the species.
• Use of reflective tapes and rotating scarecrows to disrupt the birds' sense of security.
• Strategic pruning to maintain dense canopies, making it harder for birds to land and feed comfortably.
