Description

Coccygomimus is a genus of parasitic wasps belonging to the family Ichneumonidae within the order Hymenoptera. While many ichneumonids are considered beneficial predators, the activities of Coccygomimus species in agricultural environments can lead to complex interactions, occasionally resulting in damage to sensitive plant tissues during their reproductive phases.

These insects primarily target host larvae found within woody plants and fruit crops. By searching for lepidopteran or sawfly larvae that bore into stems or fruits, the Coccygomimus female impacts the integrity of the host plant. The physical damage caused by the ovipositor creates wounds that often serve as entry points for pathogens.

The biology of Coccygomimus is intricately linked to their hosts. The female uses a specialized, long ovipositor to penetrate plant materials, such as tree bark or fruit skins, to lay eggs inside or near the host larva. The developing larvae then consume the host, eventually pupating within a silken cocoon inside the plant structure.

The severity of the damage is often secondary to the primary infestation by caterpillars or boring insects. However, the cumulative effect of host feeding and the damage caused by the wasp during egg-laying can lead to premature fruit drop, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to fungal diseases such as rot.
