Description
Coelaenomenodera perrieri is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. It is specifically known for its devastating impact on coconut palm plantations, where it acts as a primary foliage consumer.
The primary host for this pest is the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). The insect displays high host specificity, focusing its entire life cycle on the leaves of this plant, which makes it a critical concern for palm-growing industries globally.
The biology of this species is characterized by an internal developmental stage. Larvae mine the leaf tissues, creating tunnels between the epidermis layers. This feeding method allows the larvae to remain protected from many environmental stressors and some contact insecticides, significantly complicating the control process.
Damage caused by this beetle is easily identified by the presence of elongated brown mines on the leaves, which eventually merge, leading to necrosis of the entire leaf surface.
