Coelotes

The genus Coelotes belongs to the family Agelenidae, commonly known as funnel-web spiders. While spiders generally act as beneficial predators in agroecosystems, in specific greenhouse environments or dense nurseries, the accumulation of their silk structures can become a nuisance that requires management to maintain proper crop health and equipment efficiency.

The biology of Coelotes is characterized by the construction of funnel-shaped retreats, usually found near the base of plants, under debris, or in soil crevices. They are nocturnal predators that rely on their webs to intercept prey. Their life cycle is influenced by temperature and humidity, with spiders favoring undisturbed, moist environments that remain stable throughout the growing season.

From an agronomic perspective, the damage caused by Coelotes is indirect. The primary issue is the excessive accumulation of web material, which can trap excess moisture on leaves and stems, creating ideal conditions for fungal and bacterial infections. Furthermore, these dense webs can physically obstruct the application of pesticides, preventing the spray from reaching the target areas of the plant.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for this object centers on habitat modification rather than chemical eradication. By maintaining clean fields and greenhouses, removing ground debris, and ensuring proper airflow, farmers can significantly reduce the suitability of the area for spider colonization. Physical disruption of established webs is often sufficient to discourage them from specific high-value plant zones.
