Taxonomic classification. The Eratigena atrica, commonly known as the giant house spider, belongs to the Agelenidae family within the Araneae order. While often found in agricultural settings, specifically in greenhouses and storage facilities, it is scientifically categorized as a predator rather than a plant-feeding pest. Its primary role in nature is that of an opportunistic hunter that feeds on various small insects.
Biological profile and life cycle. This species is recognized for its large size, with females reaching a leg span of up to 10 cm. The life cycle is long-lived, with some individuals surviving for several years. They construct funnel-shaped webs in stable, undisturbed locations. Reproduction occurs throughout the warmer seasons, and females produce silken egg sacs which they guard in hidden, protected areas.
Interaction with crops. The giant house spider does not cause any direct damage to crops. It lacks the mouthparts required to pierce plant tissue or consume foliage. In fact, these spiders can act as natural biological control agents by consuming smaller insects that may be harmful to greenhouse crops. The only potential concern for farmers is the accumulation of silk webs on equipment or structural elements, which may cause minor logistical issues.
Agronomic significance. From an agronomic standpoint, the presence of Eratigena atrica is often a sign of a functioning, albeit perhaps cluttered, ecosystem. They rarely achieve population densities that cause significant disruption.
