Dainty damselfly

The Dainty damselfly (Coenagrion scitulum) is a species of damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae. While sometimes incorrectly listed in agricultural databases, it is not a crop pest. This insect is primarily found near stagnant or slow-moving water bodies, where it plays a role as an active predator of small flying insects, contributing to natural biological control.

In terms of biology and life cycle, the Dainty damselfly undergoes incomplete metamorphosis. The larvae, known as naiads, live entirely underwater and are voracious predators of other small aquatic invertebrates. Their presence in irrigation canals or farm ponds is often a sign of a healthy aquatic ecosystem rather than a threat to the farming operation.

Adult damselflies feed on various small insects such as gnats and midges.
