Description

The alpine leaf beetle (Colaphellus alpinus) is a member of the Chrysomelidae family. It is recognized as a specialized agricultural pest that predominantly affects plants within its native mountainous distribution zones, causing significant damage to horticultural and field crops.

The primary host plants for this pest include members of the Brassicaceae family. It poses a serious threat to various cabbage varieties, radishes, turnips, and swedes. Additionally, the beetle thrives on wild cruciferous weeds, which often act as initial breeding grounds before infestation spreads to cultivated fields.

The life cycle of Colaphellus alpinus is synchronized with seasonal temperature changes. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or beneath plant debris. Upon the arrival of warmer spring weather, they emerge to feed on young host tissues. After mating, females lay eggs near the base of the plants, and the subsequent larval development causes the most intense feeding damage.
