Pine leaf beetle

The Pine leaf beetle (Colaspis pini) is a beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This species is recognized as a significant pest of coniferous trees, particularly various species within the Pinus genus, causing both foliage and root damage depending on the life stage of the insect.

The host plants primarily affected include various pine species. Adults predominantly target the needles of the trees, feeding on the tissue, while larvae reside in the soil profile, where they consume root systems. This dual-attack pattern makes Colaspis pini a particularly dangerous pest for young saplings and nursery-grown conifers.

The life cycle of this beetle follows complete metamorphosis, comprising the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adult beetles typically emerge during the late spring and summer months to feed on new growth and reproduce. The female lays eggs in the soil, and the subsequent larval stages spend their life feeding on roots, which allows them to overwinter or complete development before pupating in the soil.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by visible chewing marks on the needles, leading to chlorosis, necrosis, and premature needle drop. In severe infestations, the root damage inflicted by larvae significantly impairs the tree's ability to absorb water and nutrients, resulting in stunting, yellowing, and potentially tree mortality in young stands.

Management and control strategies involve integrated pest management practices:

• Regular field scouting during the beetle emergence period.
• Application of systemic insecticides to the tree canopy when adults are detected.
• Soil drenching with appropriate pesticides to manage larval populations in the root zone.
