Juniper webworm

Systematic position: The juniper webworm (Coleotechnites juniperella) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. This specialized insect is known as a needle miner, specifically targeting conifers and causing significant distress to ornamental plants in gardens and nurseries.

Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the juniper (Juniperus) plant. However, it can occasionally be found on related species such as arborvitae (Thuja) and false cypress (Chamaecyparis). Dense ornamental plantings are particularly susceptible to infestations, which can lead to severe aesthetic and physiological damage.

Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter within the foliage or in silk webs. During the spring, they emerge from their wintering sites to feed on fresh needles. Pupation occurs in the summer, followed by the emergence of adults, which lay eggs on the needles for the next generation.

Damage character: The larvae feed as leaf miners, tunneling inside the needles. This feeding habit causes the needles to turn brown, die, and eventually drop off. As the larvae feed, they spin silken webs to bind the needles together, creating unsightly webbing that is often filled with larval excrement, which further degrades the appearance of the conifer.

Protection measures: To effectively manage the population of juniper webworms, the following strategies should be employed:

• Regular inspection of juniper foliage to detect early signs of webbing.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the pest population.
• Applying appropriate systemic insecticides when larvae are active during the spring.
• Promoting a healthy environment for natural predators like parasitic wasps and birds.
