Spruce needle miner

The spruce needle miner (Coleotechnites piceaella) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. This insect is a significant pest of coniferous trees, particularly various spruce species, and can cause considerable aesthetic and physiological damage to forest ecosystems and urban landscaping.

The larvae of this moth feed on the needles of Norway spruce, white spruce, and blue spruce. Because the larvae are leaf miners, they live inside the foliage, which protects them from many external threats and makes manual inspection difficult until the damage has already occurred.

The life cycle consists of one generation per year. Adult moths are typically active in early summer. After mating, females deposit eggs near the base of the needles. The young larvae bore into the needles to feed throughout the autumn and overwinter inside them. Feeding continues in the spring, leading to the development of pupae inside the mined needles or within loose webs on the branches.

The primary symptom of an infestation is the yellowing and browning of needles. The larvae consume the inner tissues, leaving behind empty, discolored shells that eventually fall off. In severe infestations, the cumulative loss of needles results in thin, sparse foliage, which can weaken the tree's health and reduce its resistance to other stress factors.

Management strategies for this pest include a combination of cultural and chemical control measures. Pruning infested branches and disposing of them can help reduce population density. When chemical intervention is necessary, applying systemic insecticides during the time of larval activity is the most effective approach to protect the health and appearance of spruce trees.
