Thuja leafminer

Systematic position. The Thuja leafminer (Coleotechnites thujaella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, specifically the Gelechiidae family. It is a significant pest of arborvitae and other coniferous species, known for its cryptic lifestyle and the specific patterns of damage it inflicts on foliage.

Host plants. This species primarily feeds on the foliage of Thuja occidentalis (Eastern white cedar). It also frequently infests various species of Juniperus. Due to its host specificity, the pest can cause significant aesthetic damage to hedges and landscape plantings in both nurseries and private gardens.

Biology and life cycle. The Thuja leafminer completes one generation per year. Adult moths emerge in early summer, typically in June, to mate and deposit eggs on the scales of the foliage. Upon hatching, the larvae mine into the leaf tissue, where they feed throughout the remainder of the growing season. They overwinter as larvae inside the hollowed-out foliage, resuming activity the following spring.

Nature of damage and pest status. The damage becomes visible as the tips of the foliage turn yellow or brownish. As the larvae consume the interior tissue of the leaves, the affected tips die off. In cases of severe infestation, the tree's overall appearance becomes stunted, and the foliage may drop prematurely, making the plant highly unattractive and susceptible to further stress.

Protection measures. Managing the Thuja leafminer requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

• Pruning and destroying heavily infested twigs to reduce the overwintering population.
• Applying systemic insecticides during the peak flight of adults or the early larval stages.
• Using pheromone traps to time treatments accurately.
• Ensuring proper plant hydration and nutrition to maintain the tree's health, which can help it better tolerate pest pressure.
