Hawaiian koa bug
Coleotichus blackburniae
Description
Systematic position. The Hawaiian koa bug (Coleotichus blackburniae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Scutelleridae (jewel bugs). It is an endemic species to the Hawaiian Islands, recognized for its vibrant coloration and significant impact on local flora, particularly plants like the Koa tree (Acacia koa).
Host plants and damage potential. This insect is primarily known for feeding on Acacia species, but it also impacts various ornamental shrubs and legumes. By piercing plant tissues, the bugs extract essential fluids, which can lead to severe stress, wilting of young shoots, and reduced seed production, potentially threatening the regeneration of native forests.
Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The female typically deposits eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The duration of the life cycle is significantly influenced by ambient temperatures. In favorable conditions, they can maintain continuous breeding, allowing populations to escalate rapidly if not managed appropriately.
Nature of damage. Damage is caused by both adults and nymphs using their piercing-sucking mouthparts. The injection of saliva containing digestive enzymes during feeding often leads to necrosis at the puncture sites. Heavy infestations can cause extensive canopy dieback, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the eventual decline of the host plant.
Management measures. Controlling the Hawaiian koa bug requires an integrated approach to maintain plant health. Recommended strategies include:
- Monitoring host plants closely during the peak breeding season.
- Manual removal of egg clusters on small or ornamental plants.
- Encouraging natural predators such as parasitic wasps that target bug eggs.
- Application of horticultural oils or targeted insecticides only when economic thresholds are met to protect the ecosystem.
