While widely recognized for its bright orange-yellow coloration, this species is noted in agricultural science as a pest capable of impacting the yield of leguminous forage crops in various climatic zones.

This insect primarily attacks crops within the Fabaceae family. Key host plants include alfalfa (lucerne), clover, vetch, and various types of trefoil. In areas where these crops are cultivated for hay or silage, significant population outbreaks of the caterpillar stage can lead to measurable losses in biomass and forage quality.

The life cycle of the Clouded yellow consists of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. Depending on local temperatures, the species can produce multiple generations annually. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, as they feed voraciously on the foliage of the host plants, often hiding beneath leaves during the heat of the day.
