The Alfalfa butterfly (Colias eurytheme) is a lepidopteran insect belonging to the Pieridae family. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly within North America, where its larvae thrive on cultivated legumes, posing a consistent challenge to forage production and quality control in agricultural systems.

The primary host plants for this species include alfalfa, clover, vetch, and various types of peas. The larvae are voracious feeders, targeting the foliage of these crops. When infestations occur, the insects consume leaf tissue, which directly impacts the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and reduces the overall biomass yield of the forage crop.

The life cycle of the Alfalfa butterfly is composed of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs individually on the underside of leaves. Depending on environmental temperatures and geographic location, the pest can complete several generations per season, leading to potential population explosions during mid-to-late summer months.

Symptoms of infestation include ragged leaf margins and, in severe cases, nearly complete defoliation of the plant canopy. This level of damage is particularly detrimental because it reduces the crude protein content of the harvested hay and can set back plant growth, making the field more susceptible to secondary stressors like drought or weed competition.
