Collyria

Collyria is a genus of parasitic wasps belonging to the family Ichneumonidae (order Hymenoptera). Within the context of agricultural science, these insects are recognized primarily as specialized parasitoids that play a significant role in the biological regulation of various stem-boring pests, most notably those affecting cereal crops.

Systematically, the genus is classified within the Hymenoptera order. Unlike phytophagous pests that directly consume plant tissue, Collyria species have evolved to target insects that are otherwise protected from environmental factors or contact pesticides due to their endophytophagous lifestyle inside stalks and stems.

The biology of Collyria is characterized by a high degree of host specificity. The female wasp locates the larva of a host, typically a sawfly, inside the plant stem. Using a specialized ovipositor, the female injects an egg into the host. The developing larva of the wasp subsequently feeds on the internal tissues of the host, ultimately preventing the host from completing its life cycle and damaging the crop.

While the Collyria wasps themselves do not cause damage to plants, their prevalence is a direct indicator of the presence of primary pests like sawflies, which are responsible for lodging and significant yield losses in wheat and other grains. Their role is to mitigate these losses naturally, acting as an essential component of the farm's ecological balance.
