Wheat stem ichneumon

Taxonomic classification: The wheat stem ichneumon (Collyria coxator) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Ichneumonidae. Although many members of this family are beneficial parasitoids, Collyria coxator is a notable pest of cereal crops that spends most of its larval stage inside the stems of host plants.

Host crops: This insect primarily infests wheat (both winter and spring varieties). Its presence is closely linked to large-scale wheat cultivation, as the plant architecture provides both the food source for the developing larvae and the necessary environment for the adult stage's reproductive activities.

Biology and lifecycle: The species completes one generation per year. Adults emerge in spring when the wheat enters the stem elongation phase. The female uses her ovipositor to insert eggs into the wheat stalk. The larvae live inside the stalk, often acting as primary consumers of the plant tissue or, in some cases, hyperparasitizing other larvae found within the stem.

Damage and economic impact: Larval feeding disrupts the vascular system of the wheat stem, preventing proper nutrient transport to the developing head. This results in withered plants, shriveled grains, and significant yield losses. Furthermore, the structural integrity of the straw is compromised, leading to increased risk of lodging and mechanical harvesting difficulties.

Control measures: Management of this pest requires a proactive agronomic approach focusing on prevention and habitat disruption:

• Implementation of crop rotation cycles to disrupt the pest's lifecycle.
• Deep autumn plowing to bury infested stubble and destroy overwintering larvae.
• Control of volunteer cereals that can host the insect throughout the off-season.
• Selection of early-maturing wheat varieties to minimize the vulnerability window during the peak emergence of adults.
