The genus Colopterus belongs to the family Nitidulidae, commonly known as sap beetles. These insects are attracted to volatile organic compounds associated with fermenting plant tissues, which often leads them to attack ripening fruits and grains in agricultural settings.
These pests primarily affect crops such as corn, strawberries, grapes, and various stone fruits. They are particularly attracted to crops that have already been damaged by birds, environmental factors, or other primary pests, as these injuries provide easy access to the plant's internal fluids.
The life cycle of the insect consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults are highly mobile and use their sense of smell to locate food sources, often congregating in large numbers where fruit decay or fermentation is present to lay eggs and feed.
