The cocoa pod borer (Conopomorpha cramerella) is a significant moth pest within the order Lepidoptera and the family Gracillariidae. It is widely recognized as the most destructive pest affecting cocoa crops, posing a continuous threat to global cocoa supply chains.
This pest primarily infests the pods of the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). However, it exhibits a wider host range, potentially affecting other crops such as rambutan, longan, and other members of the Sapindaceae and Malvaceae families, which complicates pest management efforts in tropical agroforestry.
The life cycle of the cocoa pod borer is rapid and highly synchronized with the pod development of the host plant. Female moths deposit eggs on the surface of developing cocoa pods.
